New paper highlights the role of liquidity providers in efficient markets fia.org

Today we published a paper showing how a recent market anomaly illustrates the fundamental role of liquidity providers in European financial markets. Analysis of market data from a day when a partial outage prevented liquidity providers from accessing a major pan-European exchange has revealed that their absence materially decreased volumes and increased the cost of trading. These findings underscore the need for European policymakers to tailor the regulatory framework to ensure a broad mix of investors and investment firm types, including liquidity providers, are incentivised to participate in secondary markets. We mogen trots zijn op de Nederlandse financiële sector. Van ABN AMRO Clearing, Optiver en Cboe Clear Europe kreeg ik een leerzaam en inspirerend kijkje achter de schermen bij ‘De Beurs’. Want hier zorgen ze ervoor dat onze bedrijven, ondernemers en start-ups makkelijker aan geld komen en ze beter kunnen investeren en innoveren. Hierdoor is het aantrekkelijker om in Europa te vestigen en te blijven en hoeven ze niet uit te wijken naar de Verenigde Staten. Maar, nog te vaak worden bedrijven en investeerders afgeschrikt door de grote hoeveelheid regels. Ook blijkt het nog te moeilijk om aan geld te komen om te kunnen investeren en innoveren. Dat moet anders. Het is tijd voor een Europese kapitaalmarkt. Die zorgt ervoor dat bedrijven in Nederland en Europa makkelijker aan geld komen. Zo kunnen bedrijven sneller doorgroeien en worden ze niet gedwongen uit te wijken naar de Verenigde Staten. Meer investeringen, meer groei, meer kansen. Dat is waar de VVD voor staat. Lit order book trading in Europe may be declining, but if a recent market data controversy teaches us anything, it's the importance of putting these trends into context. Until recently, the share of “off-book/on-exchange” trading reported by the industry was three times higher than the actual amount, leading many to blame OTC/SI trading for the decline in lit order books. Om onze brede welvaart en ons verdienvermogen ook in de toekomst te kunnen garanderen, heeft Nederland grotere economische veerkracht nodig. Voor benodigde investeringen in en financiering van onder meer digitalisering, defensie en de energietransitie zijn concrete acties nodig om de Nederlandse financiële sector de rol te geven die zij kan en wil vervullen. De sector heeft altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de groei van de economie en de totstandkoming van onze brede welvaart. Ending the year on a high note: At this month’s ECOFIN, Dutch Minister of Finance Eelco Heinen highlighted the important role market makers play in providing liquidity and contributing to well-functioning European capital markets. It’s encouraging to see support for a more proportionate IFR/IFD framework, and appreciation for the EBA’s constructive recommendations published in October. This aligns well with the EU’s Savings & Investment Union (SIU) and simplification ambitions, without compromising prudential safeguards.
