This week, I visited Mexico for the 13th EU-Mexico Human Rights Dialogue. I started off my visit in Zacatecas, where the EU funds a project to strengthen the forensic capacity of the local prosecutors' office to identify dead bodies. Visiting a Forensic Centre, I learned how DNA and image analysis speed-up the process of identification. This is an essential step to provide answers to the family members of the nearly 3000 disappeared persons in the state of Zacatecas. Mothers of disappeared, who are organised in collectives to search for their children, shared with me the unimaginable suffering of not knowing what happened to their children. Despite all the searching mothers show remarkable resilience, continuing to search for their children year after year and supporting others in the same situation. The EU facilitates their direct involvement in the development of policies by the Zacatecas State to prevent disappearances, for example, through immediate search operations. During my visit we also presented new EU project to support Zacatecas and other states in Mexico to combat gender-based violence. I also had the opportunity to learn about the important progress that Mexico is making on poverty reduction and gender equality. The EU and Mexico are like-minded partners, and our Human Rights Dialogue provides a valuable space to exchange on policies and practices to further strengthen human rights protection. We have already held technical exchanges on how to combat gender-based violence and look forward to continuing learning from each other in other policy areas during next year. In an era where the value of equality and diversity are being contested, Mexico and the EU are committed to working together. We will do so in multilateral negotiations, but also by demonstrating in action that women's participation and non-discrimination contribute to tangible benefits for us all. Today in Geneva High Commissioner Volker Türk and I co-chaired the UN - EU Human Rights Strategic Consultations. We discussed the centrality of human rights in every step of our engagements. From early warning systems to prevent and address instability and conflict to post conflict policies to recover from crisis and war. The presence of representatives of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights - director Sirpa Rautio - the European External Action Service and the European Commission inderlined the importance for the EU of the cooperation with the UN. …meer
